»Illustrare« means to illuminate

The art of illustration originates in the particular tensions between the specifications of an author or a source of ideas, the world of images of a painter and ultimately the viewpoint and the imagination of a reader, a beholder. It has a lot to do with the right atmosphere, with restraint, with curiosity and – like all arts – with truthfulness. And it also has to do with telling enough, but not too much. Thus, if illustration wants to be more than just a decorative addition to a text or loud self-portrayal, it will respect and take seriously the concerns of these three acting persons, so that an independent, authentic illustration can come about which simultaneously best serves the story or the theme and can pleasurably fire the imagination of the beholder. During the week we will deal with how to find one’s own images in an unknown text and then make them »readable«.
