Uwe Kolbe

Born in 1957 in (East) Berlin. After secondary school and military service initially various occasional jobs. 1976 publication of own poems in the magazine"Sinn und Form". Shortly after a contract for first book "Hineingeboren". Since then active as a freelance author (areas of work: poetry, essay, narration) and translator.

Due to the controversies which his poems created, publication ban in the GDR between 1982 and 1985. During this period, active as a translator and publisher of the short magazine "Mikado", which crept into the official cultural scene. Since 1985 travels to various countries of western Europe and the USA. 1989 guest lecturer in Austin/Texas. 1997-2003 head of the Literature and Theater Studio of the University of Tübingen. Lives and works as a free-lance author in Berlin. Member of the Freie Akademie der Künste (Free Academy of Arts) in Leipzig.

Kolbe has received numerous prizes (selection): Grant Literatur zum Kunstpreis (Literature for the Art Prize) in Berlin/West (1987), Grant for the Hölderlin Prize in Bad Homburg (1987), Nicolas Born Prize from the Hubert Burda Foundation (1988), Villa Massimo Scholarship (1992), Friedrich Hölderlin Prize of the City of Tübingen (1993), writer-in-residence in Rheinsberg (2005).
